Sustainable and efficient forest management requires attention to each phase of the forest life cycle, from inventory and planting to harvesting and woodchip production. Forest management is not a one-off event, but a long-term process in which knowledge and experience, as well as regulatory compliance, play a key role.
According to the laws and regulations of the Republic of Latvia, every forest owner is obliged to:
- Carry out a forest inventory (every 20 years) and keep it up to date (MoEF),
- ensure reforestation after logging (according to Article 29 of the Forest Law),
- care for and protect young trees,
- prepare the necessary documents and clearances with the State Forest Service (SFS) before logging starts [source: www.vmd.gov.lv].

Forest valuation
The owner or legal holder of the forest must ensure that the forest in his ownership or legal possession is subject to a first forest valuation.
